Chapter 9
Forewarned is Forearmed
The thing was, I had received far too much information to digest most of it without some time having to pass. I needed time to think about what I had been told and shown so I could properly digest what I had learned. My mind was still reeling from that knowledge. The one thing I understood clearly, was the enemy that I must destroy. The war that was coming. The sheer enormity of the mission for me now against our enemies seemed impossible. My thoughts concentrated upon this mission, but they also kept harking back to the destruction of the Earth, the death of my friends and all the people I knew who were now lost and gone to me forever. A vast sadness overtook me then, but I had to shake it off in order to keep my mind focused on what was important nowâprotecting Ares. Saving my people.
I fought a battle within myself to firm up my will and to keep my thoughts focused upon Ares and the new life I had here now. Earth was gone, Ares must be my main concern now. My thoughts centered firmly upon my beloved wife Sirah, our son Alun, true friends and comrades like Zaor, Sahn-jor and Ras-noor. I even thought of my newest friend and allyâQuarto-Zar, Admiral of the fleetâand of all the things he was a Winged-man from Zar! Who would have ever thought such a friendship possible? Not I! The universe was certainly proving to be a most amazing place.
And in the middle of it all was the fight between myself and Lord Karlath Doom, and behind him, the unknown entity called the Kin-Ty-Roo. I had no idea what I was up against, and I knew I had little powers of my own to do much to further my cause for victory. It was true I was an emperor, and in taking on that role I had united our people, but I had very little actual power of my own in this realm of action. I knew I would need to formulate our plan of battle, and soon I would set the wheels in motion and get ready for war on a scale no world had ever seen before.
My saving grace was the knowledge that Lord Kneth was fully recovered and avidly working with us now. His quest for revenge on Lord Doom had given him new strength and great resolve, a bold purpose for life and action. I did not care at all that it was revenge that primarily motivated himâfor it was revenge that also fiercely motivated me as well. Revenge could be good. It could prove most useful. Revenge against Doom for all that he had done against myself and Sirah, and the danger he placed my wife and sonâand my adopted world inâbut also for what he had done to the Earth. I could never forget that.
How could I ever forget the Earth! The thought of what I had seen done to the planet of my birth would haunt me for the rest of my life.
